Feature article : No second helpings

It's so easy to put your life on hold until you lose weight, easy to say "I'll do that once I've lost a few pounds" or "I couldn't do that I'm too fat".

But you only have one life - there are no second helpings. So you owe it to yourself to live it now and to live it to the full.

This has a double positive impact on your diet

1. You Keep Busy

If you're busy working to achieve something, it keeps your mind occupied with activities other than food.

You know how it is with a diet - you feel hungry just because you're thinking about food all the time - what you can and can't eat, what you should and shouldn't have eaten at your last mealtime. If you have other things to keep your mind occupied, things you're 100% involved in, you'll be able to stick to your diet more easily.

Have you ever been engaged in an activity where you were so absorbed you forgot to eat? People who live their lives follo wing their passions, going for their goals have a lot more of those moments - it's called "being in the flow state" and in flow your thoughts are on anything but food!

2. Avoid Self-Sabotage

The second reason for getting on with your life can have an even more dramatic affect on your diet. It's all to do with self-sabotage.

If you're just a tiny bit scared that you're not cut out to achieve what you want to achieve in life, you may be using your weight as a form of protection. And you'll sabotage your diet at every turn to keep those pounds so that you don't put yourself in the position of trying and failing. Your weight is an excuse to keep yourself within your comfort zone i.e. what you know and are used to.

If you recognise this in yourself, take just tiny steps towards your goal every day, tiny steps that don't seem difficult at all. You'll build your success little by little and gradually lose your fear and your weight.

Put this into practise and what could be more satisfying? You'll be losing weight and having a great time too. Life is not all about diets and diets don't have to be all consuming.

You only have one life, so go for whatever it is you want!

This month's tip : Every little counts

Most diets advise you to include exercise alongside whatever eating plan they present. Without doubt, exercise does make a difference.

But sometimes it can put you right off and be just one effort too far when you're tired and overloaded.

If it's one of those days when you just can't see your way to a full-blown exercise session (and even if every day is one of those days) make yourself feel better with a mini-activity. This can be as little as

  • a walk around the block
  • taking a single flight of stairs instead of the lift
  • spending 5-10 minutes tidying your home
  • walking over to chat to a colleague instead of emailing
  • kicking a ball with your children in the garden before tea
  • making alternate circles with your feet while talking on the phone
  • holding your tummy in at traffic lights

Every time you do something, anything at all, you are adding to your fitness bank and subtracting calories. Try to do something whenever you think about it during the day. Just remember every little counts!

Recommendation: You are What You Eat

I'm being hugely inspired just now by the UK Channel 4 programme "You are What you Eat" in which Dr Gillian McKeith helps people completely revise their diet.

The families featured are seriously affected by the vast amounts of junk food they eat and yet 8-weeks on Dr Gillian's diet sees them well on the way to curing the health problems caused by their poor diet.

The diet is strict and the families struggle at first but not one of them so far has opted for their old life style after 8-weeks on the new regime.

See the Channel 4 website You are What you eat for more info. There's also a book of the same name to accompany the series.

Wishing you a fantastic month, looking and feeling great
