Think Slim, Issue #014 - Do you have time to lose weight?August 30, 2005 |
Look great, feel greatHi The kids in Scotland have gone back to school now including my two so it's back into the old routine of getting them out the house and delivered to the gate with all the right stuff. September and the start of a new school year is also a great time for new beginnings - just right for kicking off a new effort to lose weight – and just a few months to the party season. Just think how you could look in December if you made the effort now! Have a great month Love
P.S. There are quite a few postings on the Think Slim blog this month. See them all at http://smallchange.typepad.com/thinkslim. Sometimes it feels like there's hardly time to breathe let alone fit in more time for exercise and getting ourselves organised to eat more healthily. And when we do get free time we often just collapse, worn out, in front of the TV. But more and more we need to think whether this is any way to spend our days. We get through what we think we have to do but we don't fully live our lives. We are just surviving. The problem is that we give priority to so many things above our health and well-being. By the time we wish we'd done more about our health and our bodies, old age and ill-health have often taken their toll. Before you get too depressed about this scenario let me say that none of this is set in stone. You can decide right now to look at how you are allocating your time and attention and do things differently. What are you giving a higher priority to than your health? Shouldn't your health be number 1 on your list? After all, every other activity depends on you being healthy enough to take part – not to mention all the people who also rely upon you. Compared to your health and well-being is the parent teacher association really so important? Is staying an extra 2 hours at the office every night? Is following every soap on TV? Will you die if you miss an episode or two? Sometimes learning to say "No" to activities and additional responsibilities is as important to losing weight as saying "No" to too much food. So weigh up all the things you have on your radar and decide which of them you are going to drop. Then turn down any other activities which take up your time but don't give enough back in terms of contributing fun and balance in your life. Only then will you have time to get yourself in shape and keep looking and feeling good for the rest of your life. This month's tip : Slower SnacksIf you find you're the type who eats a bowl of peanuts or packet of cookies empty almost without realising it then it's a good idea to choose slower snacks – ones which you actually have to make an effort to eat. Instead of a bowl of peanuts, try pistachios. You have to make the effort to shell each one. Or buy the peanuts still in their shells. Or even better, how about a bowl of cherries. They are very healthy and the stone in each one will slow you down. Or carrots that you have to crunch. As for cookies, if you must buy them get the ones that come individually wrapped and take just one little packet out at a time. Then you have to make an effort to get up, get another one and unwrap it if you want another one.
