Think Slim, Issue #020 - Your Weight is not the Problem

February 28, 2006

Look great, feel great

Hi

We're still getting some wintery weather here in Scotland but the days are starting to get a bit longer again and the blossom has come out on the big tree at the bottom of my garden.

It's not that long to summer for those of you in the northern hemisphere so don't leave it too long to get serious with your weight loss efforts. You probably know by now that those "Get a beach body in 4 weeks" articles are just not going to cut it when you have 40lbs to lose.

And consider this month's article when you think about what you really need to change. Is it really just your weight?

Love

Jan

Feature article : Your Weight is not the Problem

If you are overweight you probably think that weight IS your problem. After all the very thing you want to change is your weight. But your weight is not your real problem - it's just a symptom of something else that is wrong.

So what is your problem?

The real issue for anyone who is overweight is overeating. If you are overweight it means that you have eaten (and you are maybe still eating) more food than your body needs given your level of activity.

Until you resolve that underlying problem you'll never lose weight permanently. Maybe with a period of strict dieting, you'll successfully lose weight but it will come back with a vengeance if you don't tackle your overeating.

The first step to changing your habit of overeating is to become aware of it. Ask yourself the following questions and see if you can recognise your own patterns:-

Do you eat more than you need at meal times?
Do you leave the table stuffed rather than satisfied?
Do you eat even when you're not physically hungry?
Do you eat now in case you don't get the opportunity later?
Do you eat food just because it's offered?
Do you pick at leftovers even after you leave the table?
Do you pile food on your plate?
Do you have seconds (and thirds)?
Do you sometimes eat so quickly you hardly notice the food going down?
Do you hide how much you eat from others?
Do you constantly snack all day?

Make a note of how often and when you overeat this week. You may be astonished at just how often you eat more than you really need.

You can then take steps to get your eating under control one habit at a time because overeating is a habit you can't afford to have if you want to be slim.

This month's tip : Healthy Take-aways

For those times when you just can't face cooking, don't send out for pizza or Chinese take-away. Buy a healthy meal from your supermarket on your way home.

I don't mean those ready-meals that are full of preservatives, salt, lots of sauce and little of substance.

Look for healthy vegetable soups in cartons, fresh pasta sauces or good whole meal crusty bread. Most supermarkets have a huge selection of ready prepared salads and vegetables too as well as fruit salads. And you can buy a whole roast chicken, cooked seafood or even a whole pack of stir fry ingredients that will take just a few minutes to serve up.

Make up a meal from the healthier ready foods and prepared ingredients available and you can eat like a king and in less time than it will take for the take-away to turn up.
