Think Slim, Issue #022 - What are You Waiting For?

April 30th, 2006

Look great, feel great

Hi

Welcome to the new Think Slim, which goes with the site revamp. I hope you like the new design of the site and will stay with us as you get motivated to lose weight.

This month's article is all about getting started with losing weight (or getting restarted if you've fallen off the wagon a bit lately).

Tomorrow is Monday and it's a new month - a great time to begin, although anytime is a good time if you need to lose weight .....

Have a great month

Love

Jan

Feature article : What are You Waiting For?

Getting slim (or fit or toned) is one of those things that we always keep promising ourselves we'll do sometime. But somehow sometime never comes.

Every six months or so maybe you work up the enthusiasm to lose a few pounds or have a few sessions in the gym. Then your motivation disappears like the mist in May and you're back to square one again, while still fondly thinking that you'll get to your goal weight or desired level of fitness sometime.

But there is really no time like the present. Why not enjoy all the benefits of being slim, toned and fit right now rather than waiting for "sometime" in the future.

After all what are you waiting for? Some real motivation?

  • Are you waiting until you get some real problems with your health like diabetes or heart disease to give yourself the motivation? Do it now and stay healthy to a ripe old age.
  • Are you waiting until life has passed you by and you've finally got time to lose weight? Why not enjoy a new you now with all your life still to live?
  • Are you waiting until bikini weather hits when you'll suddenly get desperate to lose 10lbs fast? Lose them now without the desperation and smile when summer comes.

If you find it hard to stay motivated beyond a few weeks, don't beat yourself up about it. Expect your motivation to dwindle - that's natural. People often don't stay 100% motivated the whole time when trying to achieve a goal which takes a lot of effort.

But there's no need to drop out once your initial motivation wanes.

The secret is to give yourself frequent pep talks about all the reasons why you want your goal for yourself not "sometime" but right now and to keep doing whatever it takes anyway whether you feel motivated or not. Don't look ahead too far. Take one day, one meal, one exercise session at a time and work with that.

Even Olympic champions don't feel motivated to turn up for every training session, but they do it anyway. Your motivation will soon come back when you see results. Even if your motivation comes and goes you'll succeed if you take that "do it anyway" one step at a time approach. Believe you can succeed - because you can, if you just get going and keep going.

This month's tip : Test Your Hunger

If you think you're hungry for a snack and are tempted to choose something high in calories, test your hunger first.

Tell yourself you can have whatever you like to eat, if you are still hungry and want it after you have prepared and eaten some healthy food first.

So you could choose a carrot you have to peel and chop, an apple you have to wash and slice or some sticks of crunch celery.

If you can be bothered to do all that and you still feel hungry after your healthy snack - go ahead - you really ARE hungry.
