Feature article : Weight Loss Motivation Made Simple

We all know that weight loss doesn't come easily to most of us no matter what the ads try to make us believe.

It's not that the actual elements of losing weight are so difficult.

In fact, when you look at what it takes to lose weight in the cold light of day (eating less and moving more), it is within anyone's ability to achieve.

It's just that motivation to do those things tends to dwindle very quickly indeed when faced with all the choices we have each day to eat a heap more than we should and avoid moving even a bit more than we are used to. Life (and lack of motivation) just get in the way time and time again.

But people do manage to lose weight, so how do they do it?

Those who succeed at weight loss generally have a high level of

DESIRE

They want to achieve their target weight more than they want to lie about on the sofa eating potato chips.

BELIEF

They know deep down that their desire is achievable if they do what it takes.

CERTAINTY

They don't doubt that they will take the required actions and get there in the end. And even if they fall by the wayside once or twice they simply start again with more determination than ever.

So how will you succeed at weight loss this year?

To increase your chances of success, constantly increase your desire by reminding yourself of the reasons why you want to lose weight and by imagining a bright sparling future where you are slim and healthy.

You probably believe already that if you follow a weight loss program to the letter you will succeed. But if you tend to tell yourself nothing works, start looking seriously at the countless people of all shapes and sizes who have succeeded before you. Know that you can do this too but only if you take consistent action.

Finally be clear in your own mind that you are not going to let anything stand in your way. Understand that though you will not be perfect from now on (you wouldn't be human if you were) you will do your best and not give up if things don't go exactly according to plan. Slip-ups and plateaus are part of the experience of almost everyone who ever lost weight.

So you can see that it's not so very hard to adopt the right mindset. Work on that as much as you work on any other aspect of losing weight because it truly is a key to success - and the missing link for so many people who fail. There's no doubt about it, without enough desire, belief and certainty your weight loss efforts will go nowhere fast but with a little effort to get your thoughts in line you can finally succeed in 2007, you really can!

This month's tip : Baking Temptation

Here's a tip I read in a newsletter around Christmas time but it can be useful any time of year. If you like baking (and it's not just an excuse to eat!) use this trick to keep temptation at bay.

Whenever you make cookie dough, make a normal sized batch but bake only enough cookies for everyone to have one or two. Once you've made the dough simply cover and chill the excess in the mixing bowl. Then make walnut-sized balls of dough and freeze them in batches of 2 - 6 in small freezer bags (depending on the size of your family).

When you want cookies take a small bag out of the freezer, leave to defrost while the oven heats up and then place the small balls on a baking tray (cookie sheet) and bake. (They may take a minute or so longer than usual).

With this tip you never have the danger of a whole trayful of cookies to eat your way through. Also if you have to bake cookies whenever you want them, as opposed to simply opening a packet and scoffing them all down, it may make you think twice about eating them at all.
